Valves & the Decline of System Operability
Industry Challenges Across America

Valve Exercising
Implementing a routine valve exercising program that captures accurate information about the location and condition of valves is a critical step utilities can take to ensure the operability of water valves which is especially important in preventing catastrophic failure in the event of an emergency. Wachs Utility Services has worked in distribution systems across the country; below are some of our findings:

On average 40% of the valves in a distribution system are not operable
Up to 10% of valves are in the wrong position
Up to 20% of valves may be paved over or buried
